The installation of this system marks an improvement in the quality of life of 25 orphaned and vulnerable children, who are looked after by the association from Monday to Saturday. Before the intervention, water shortages were a daily challenge, with the supply from the public network limited to just two hours a day, three times a week.

“Without water it was extremely difficult to guarantee hygiene, food and proper care for the children. Water became an essential priority for the dignified and safe running of our centre,” explains the association.

With the new borehole over 50 metres deep and the Grundfos pump in operation, the centre now has continuous access to water. The change has had an immediate and positive impact on the children’s hygiene, food and health routines, and has also made it possible to irrigate the vegetable gardens grown on site.

“The pump has brought about a very significant change. Today the children can bathe regularly, stay clean, healthy and have clean clothes. Even their school performance has improved,” says the organisation.

As well as the resident children, the system also benefits other families in the local community, who turn to the centre in times of scarcity to obtain water or wash clothes. It is estimated that between 40 and 50 people are currently benefiting directly or indirectly from the infrastructure.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, the association carries out regular technical inspections and promotes the rational use of water. The pump is treated as an essential asset, and its maintenance is one of the local team’s priorities.

This action is part of Blue Zone’s commitment to social responsibility projects that have already benefited Casa do Gaiato and Associação Beneficiária de Crianças Desamparadas de Moçambique (ABEC).

The programme took place at DAB’s facilities in Mestrino and Bientina, with an intensive agenda that included institutional presentations, guided tours of the factories, training sessions on new products and installation practices, as well as integration activities with other international partners. The training stood out for its technical depth and the exchange of experiences on DAB’s latest solutions in the water pumping sector.

Blue Zone is DAB’s official representative in Mozambique, and this participation reinforces its ability to offer increasingly efficient and innovative solutions that are aligned with international standards.

The event was aimed at Grundfos’ seven main partners in sub-Saharan Africa, with the aim of strengthening strategic relationships and sharing best practices in the water and energy efficiency sector for commercial buildings.

During the event, participants had exclusive access to training sessions and workshops focussed on services and products for commercial buildings (CBS – Commercial Building Services), where they discussed topics such as:

• Optimisation of building systems for greater efficiency and sustainability;
• Grundfos’ local strategy for 2025 and integration of partners in the global strategy until 2027;
• Innovation and customised solutions for building projects;
• Interaction with dedicated teams from the areas of After Sales, Finance, Logistics and Service Delivery.

The event reinforced Grundfos’ commitment to its partners and emphasised the importance of ongoing collaboration to meet challenges and explore new opportunities in the sector.

The system uses two Grundfos SQ Flex pumps to pump groundwater that is stored and then distributed through a pipework system. There is a dedicated reservoir that supplies the Njala University Hospital and terminal water outlets to distribute water throughout the Njala community.

The irrigation system uses solar energy to pump water from a borehole to a reservoir tank and an outlet water filter.

The owners’ main concern was that there was no electricity supply near the dam and no economically viable way of getting it there. As a solution, a solar-powered Grundfos SQFlex pump was installed.

The SQFlex SP3A-10 model was installed at a depth of 30m, pumping a total height of 25m and delivering 25m³/day, along with 6 150Wp solar modules to produce the energy needed to achieve this. The miracle of water in an area like this was witnessed almost immediately, transforming the area from a dry, cracked dam bed into a “paradise for hippos”.

In this way, the animals began to return to their usual place of consumption: crocodile, hippopotamus, roe deer and lion have all returned since then. ConServ, the local Grundfos distributor in the area, was involved in the project from conception to final installation.
