With support from the Grundfos Foundation, the non-governmental organisation ADDA implemented a transformative community irrigation project in Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, between 2022 and 2023. The project, designed to provide a sustainable solution to the water challenges faced by communities in Tanzania’s capital region, has breathed life into predominantly agricultural livelihoods.
In Dodoma, where agriculture supports more than 80 per cent of the population, the need for reliable water sources has become increasingly apparent. Situated in the arid and semi-arid belt, Dodoma faced the harsh reality of an unpredictable climate and severe drought, leaving both human and agricultural water needs severely unmet.
In response to this dire situation, ADDA took steps to change the lives of these communities through a project that facilitated increased income through off-season production for 136 small farmers and access to drinking water for their families (4-8 people per household).
