Grundfos Foundation invests in sport

In partnership with the Grundfos Foundation, FANT started the “Girls Saturday” project in 2022, which provides girls with different sports activities once a month throughout Sierra Leone.

“Through taking part in sporting activities, girls experience greater self-confidence and a realisation of their own empowerment, which makes them able to stand up for themselves and become an active part of the changes they want to see in their communities,” says Mamaduh Bah, Project Coordinator at FANT Sierra Leone.

Recently, the Grundfos Foundation granted around 300,000 euros to FANT to continue the work carried out in the first phase of the “Girls Saturday” project. Football pitches in 30 local communities in Sierra Leone will be dedicated to girls on the last Saturday of every month, as well as the pitches of 6 newly created handball clubs.

“Girls’ Saturday is a free space with an informal tone and a forum where serious and often taboo subjects can be addressed, such as the risk of rape, menstruation, circumcision, which is a problem among girls in Sierra Leone, lack of access to education and others,” says Mamaduh Bah.

With this project, the girls are beginning to have dreams and hopes for a future that involves sport and where they are listened to, as well as hoping to be role models for future generations.
