Grundfos helps create the ideal place for hippos in Namibia

The private game farm Erindi Ranch, located in the north-central region of Namibia, was recently faced with a water shortage problem. The dilemma was that a waterhole, which had always been a reliable source of water for the animals, had dried up due to the low rainfall in the area in recent years. This was a major concern for the owners, who had to take action before the animals left the area in search of another water source or died.

The owners’ main concern was that there was no electricity supply near the dam and no economically viable way of getting it there. As a solution, a solar-powered Grundfos SQFlex pump was installed.

The SQFlex SP3A-10 model was installed at a depth of 30m, pumping a total height of 25m and delivering 25m³/day, along with 6 150Wp solar modules to produce the energy needed to achieve this. The miracle of water in an area like this was witnessed almost immediately, transforming the area from a dry, cracked dam bed into a “paradise for hippos”.

In this way, the animals began to return to their usual place of consumption: crocodile, hippopotamus, roe deer and lion have all returned since then. ConServ, the local Grundfos distributor in the area, was involved in the project from conception to final installation.
